IC 1396, The Elephant Trunk Nebula, is a large emission nebula located in the constellation Cepheus. This glowing cloud of hydrogen gas is energized by a central cluster of young, massive stars whose ultraviolet radiation causes the surrounding gas to glow. IC 1396 contains numerous dense pockets of gas and dust - most famously the Elephent Trunk - where gravity is actively forming new stars.
